SUCCESS FOR THE 14TH ANISG CONFERENCE
In April 2010 (18-21 April), the 14th Australian Near Infrared Spectroscopy Group (ANISG) Conference was held in Adelaide, the wine capital of Australia. The Conference brought together NIR researchers, students and users of the technology from a wide variety of backgrounds, applications and industries, as well as the major suppliers of NIR equipment and software, to discuss and view current developments. Prior to the Conference a Short Course on aspects of Spectroscopy for Real Applications was presented by Woody Barton and Jim de Haseth from Light Solutions.

2010 TOMAS HIRSCHFELD AWARD
ICNIRS and Buchi NIRS Solutions are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2010 Tomas Hirschfeld Award is Jim Reeves. Jim has spent his entire career at the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture. His introduction to near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) came in 1984 when he started working using NIRS for forage and silage analysis.

A BIG SUCCESS FOR THE 1ST ASIAN NIR SYMPOSIUM
The first Asian NIR Symposium held at Tsukuba in Japan on 10-14 November 2008 was a big success. Nearly 240 people, mainly Asian researchers attended the 5 days conference. Karl Norris Award was established by the Japan Council of NIRS. The award was first called FANTEC award when its first winner was Karl Norris in 2003. From 2004, the award has become Karl Norris Award. It aims to acknowledge the scientist who has made a great contribution to practical NIRS applications or to spread NIRS around the world. The present sponsor for Karl Norris Award is Shizuoka Shibuya Seiki Company (Former Maki-Fantec Company). The past Karl Norris winners are Tony Davies (2004), Fred McClure (2005), Phil Williams (2006) and Karoly Kaffka (2007). The 2007 Annual Meeting of the Spectroscopical Society of Japan was held at the Centennial Hall of Tokyo Institute of Technology during 12-14 November, 2007. On Nov 13, a two and a half hour long session called “Invitation to advance NIRS” was organized and chaired by Satoru Tsuchikawa (Nagoya University).

THE UJNR MEETING – FOOD AND AGRICULTURE PANEL 2007
The United States-Japan Natural Resources (UJNR) meeting – Food and Agriculture Panel 2007 was held in Tsukuba city, Japan during October 21-25. The meeting, co-organized by USDA and National Food Research Institute (NFRI) composed of many sessions such as food safety, food functionality, processing, cereals, etc. One of those was the instrumental analysis session. Totally, there were 8 talks and 1 poster related NIRS.

The annual short courses on NIRS were arranged by and at NFRI on March and September. The Beginner course in March attracted 23 trainees while the Intermediate course in September attracted 28 trainees. The courses were conducted by Sumio Kawano, Mitsuhiro Miyazawa and Tetsuo Sato.

SOUTH AFRICA - SWEDISH RESEARCH AWARD FOR NIR HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING RESEARCH
Dr Marena Manley of the Department of Food Science, Stellenbosch University, and Dr Paul Geladi of the Unit for Biomass Technology and Chemistry at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå, Sweden, jointly received a collaborative research grant of R600 000 under the South African - Swedish Bilateral Agreement, funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Swedish Research Council (VR).

22ND NIR FORUM 2006 IN JAPAN
The 22nd NIR Forum organized by JCNIRS was held from 8 to 10 November 2006 at Kenkyuu Koryu Center, Tsukuba city. The International speakers were Phil Williams (Canada) and Gerry Downey (Ireland). Phil was invited as the winner of 2006 Karl Norris Award for his contribution in establishing NIRS inspection system for grains. Gerry, the winner for Tomas Hirschfeld Award 2007 and the Immediate Past Chairman of ICNIRS talked about works on fruit authenticity and food safety evaluation. The winner for the best poster award was Kyoto Tei on “in vivo Monitoring of prion-infected mouse”.

PHIL WILLIAMS VISITS DEPARTMENT OF FOOD SCIENCE AT STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY
Phil Williams recently (2-3 November 2006) presented a Short Course in the Practical Implementation of Near infrared Spectroscopy for the User at the Department of Food Science, Stellenbosch University. It was the first time ever that such a course was presented in South Africa and it was exceptionally well received. The course was attended by 37 participants who represented various industries i.e., agriculture, animal feeds, wheat milling, pharmaceutical, health food, beer brewing and NIR instrumentation distributors.

The first Chinese Conference on NIRS was held from 28 to 30 October 2006 in Beijing. The conference was organized by the China Association for Instrument Analysis (CAIA) and the Chinese Petroleum Society (CPS), and sponsored by the Research Institute of Petrochemical Processing (SINOPEC).

The Japan-Korea Joint NIR Symposium was held from 28 to 30 June 2006 at Hanyang University, Seoul. The symposium was co-organized by the Japan Council of NIRS and Korean Society of NIRS. A half-day short course was arranged on June 28, followed by the regular symposium with oral/poster presentations and company exhibitions.

2 NIR SHORT COURSES ORGANIZED BY NFRI
Two NIR short courses organized by National Food Research Institute (NFRI) were organized in March and September. The March course was an Introductory course conducted by Sumio Kawano, while the September course was an Intermediate-Advance course conducted by Mitsuhiro Miyazawa (National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences: NIAS), Satoru Tsuchikawa (Nagoya University), Sumio Kawano (NFRI) and Sirinnapa Saranwong (NFRI). Eighteen trainees from companies, institutes and universities attended the Introductory course while twenty-seven attended the Intermediate-Advance course.

FRONTIER RESEARCH ON BASIC SCIENCE
The 2nd Symposium of near infrared section organized by the Spectroscopial Society of Japan was held on January 29, 2006 at Tokyo University, Tokyo. The title of the Symposium was “Frontier Research on Basic Science” while most of the talks focused on the use of NIRS on water analysis. Approximately 70 persons attended the meeting.
